CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION

On behalf of The United States Department of State Office of Cooperative Threat Reduction, CRDF Global will host an in-person, two-day conference in Santiago, Chile, on October 11th-12th, 2023. The conference will address best practices for developing and implementing best practices to foster innovation and safeguard intellectual property (IP) from forced transfer and misuse.

 

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES 

The conference will provide participating individuals and institutions with information and best practices to protect their innovative IP from forced transfer. Participants will learn strategies for identifying reliable partners for collaboration and how to reduce risks of technologies being transferred unknowingly. Participating individuals will conclude the conference better empowered to protect their IP, including research capital, data, research findings, and finalized technology. This conference will focus on dialogue and cooperative discussion between all participating members. We warmly invite you to register to be part of this engagement.

  • Advancing innovation and ensuring equitable and transparent scientific collaboration
  • Identifying indicators of reliable and risky partnerships

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? 

This conference is best suited for university and research institution leadership, senior researchers, and administrators who are engaged in advanced and emerging areas of technology. Those in positions of responsibility for their institution’s international collaborations, research partnerships, and research policy development are particularly invited. Members of the Chilean government engaged in science and technology, security, higher education, and other interested individuals are warmly invited to register to attend.

Sapna Marwaha

Sapna founded Formation Consultancy, where she brings together her skills as a solicitor, research and innovation manager, trainer and facilitator to support universities and research organizations to respond more effectively to the challenges of an increasingly complex regulatory environment.

Prior to establishing Formation Consultancy, Sapna gained a decade of experience advising higher education institutions and research funders as an inhouse lawyer on legal and compliance issues. Sapna has led legal teams at the University of Nottingham and research funders, Versus Arthritis and LifeArc. She has led the design and implementation of research due diligence processes as well as systems-based solutions to legal and compliance activity within university and funder environments.

Linsey Dickson

Linsey is Director of Research Services at the University of Stirling, with responsibility for a wide range of research strategy and operations including research development, research integrity and governance, researcher development, research culture, research performance, and research systems.

Her contributions span from leading the initial best practice exchanges in the UK, where the sector was adapting to assurance and due diligence as a developing field, to her involvement in the latest project evaluating how the sector addresses research security in innovation.

Mayra Ameneiros

Mayra is a Research Associate at King's College London's Centre for Science and Security Studies. Ameneiros has over 15 years of experience working at national, regional and international levels, where she has acquired expertise in the fields of biosecurity, biorisk management, biological and chemical threats, and global health security. Ameneiros is a Senior Advisor for several organizations in the United States, where she contributes to capacity-building efforts across Latin America with a focus on biorisk management, biosecurity, cyber-biosecurity, research security, dual-use research, among others.

Ameneiros is the Deputy Coordinator and member of the Board of Directors at the Next Generation Global Health Security Network, where she serves as liaison to the Global Health Security Agenda Consortium´s Steering Committee and the Biological Weapons Convention NGO working group.

DJ Nag

Dr. DJ Nag is the President of Innovaito LLC, an intellectual property strategy think tank. He recently joined the National Science Foundation (NSF) as an intellectual property and technology transfer expert. He is an independent board member and Chair of the Governance committee at Crown Electrokinetics Inc. (NASDAQ: CRKN), an energy-saving technology company. DJ was the Chief Investment Officer and head of IP and partnership at Ventech Solutions Inc., a healthcare technology company that manages quality data for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) (2019-21). He has successfully led Ohio State University, Rutgers University, and the University of Nebraska’s technology transfer offices, including licensing, startup, and investments. As a serial entrepreneur, he successfully led several startups in the intellectual property strategy, artificial intelligence, and medical device space. He teaches intellectual property strategy and negotiations as a Professor of Practice at Rutgers University, a Lecturer at the ITQB NOVA, Oeiras, Portugal, and a Visiting Professor at Shizuoka University, Japan.

Carolina Calvo

Carolina Calvo Asencio has experience in studies and economic consultancies as a Studies Coordinator and Regulatory Advisor at the Ministry of Economy; Executive Advisor at Estudios de Economía, the Economic Journal of Universidad de Chile; and an economic advisor of institutions such as Inter-American Development Bank, Sodimac SA, and Retail Finance SA. Shealso has experience in management as the Head of Planning and Project Management at the National Migration Service and Head of Studies and Development at ASIPLA.
Since 2010, Asencio has taught courses in Microeconomics,Econometrics, Industrial Organization, Economics of Organizations and Innovation, and Project Evaluation at Universidad Adolfo Ibá³ez, Universidad Diego Portales,Universidad del Desarrollo, and Universidad Andrés Bello.
