CRDF Global Regional Cybersecurity Fellowship

Funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by CRDF Global

The Regional Cybersecurity Fellowship provides networking and professional development opportunities for sixteen mid-career cybersecurity professionals from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia.

Fellows represent government, academia, and the nonprofit sector. Through this program, fellows will build technical capacity, deepen understanding of policy and governance frameworks, and promote international collaboration. Each fellowship will include:

  • Orientation and networking opportunities

  • Tailored 3-week placement with U.S. host institution

  • Action planning workshop with industry experts

  • Professional meetings in Washington, DC

  • Opportunities to experience U.S. culture

Following the fellowship, participants will convene in Athens, Greece to present their capstone projects and progress to date.

Fellowship Locations

  • All fellows will meet in Denver, Colorado for the project opening, professional programming, and networking.
  • Fellows will then travel to their fellowship placements in either: Boston, Massachusetts; Denver, Colorado; Lawrence, Kansas; or Seattle, Washington.
  • All fellows will meet for professional programming in Washington, DC.

  • Cybersecurity policy and regulatory frameworks
  • Threat information and intelligence sharing 
  • Cybersecurity incident response and crisis management
  • Cybersecurity workforce development
  • Digital resilience-building strategies

 

Fellowship Outcomes

  • A three-week development plan for the assigned fellow. 
  • A presentation outlining next steps for the capstone project, which can be presented to CRDF Global and the Department of State in Washington, DC. 
  • A network of contacts in the U.S. to support capstone project completion and future collaboration.

Fellowship Objectives

  • Enhance technical skills and knowledge of fellows in various areas of cybersecurity, including but not limited to network security, information security management, incident response, and digital forensics.

  • Provide fellows with insights into cybersecurity policies, regulations, and governance frameworks at both national and international levels, fostering a deeper understanding of the legal and regulatory aspects of cybersecurity.

  • Enhance fellows’ preparedness to detect, respond to, and recover from cybersecurity incidents and breaches. Training may include incident response planning, cyber crisis management, and resilience-building strategies.

  • Enhance and refine leadership skills, including but not limited to communication, teamwork, decision-making, and strategic thinking.

  • Develop initiatives and projects that have a lasting impact on the cybersecurity ecosystem in the Western Balkans and Moldova.

Information for U.S. Host Institutions

  • Institutional Support: Including orientation and access to a designated workspace.

  • Mentorship and Guidance: Regular check-ins with assigned fellow to discuss the fellow’s progress, challenges, or ideas.

  • Project Facilitation: The fellow is invited to collaborate with staff on relevant research or activities and is provided access to appropriate resources.

  • Professional Development: The fellow is provided opportunities to advance their career through access to information, networking, and collaboration.

  • Reporting and Feedback: Mentors (“Hosts”) will help fellows to outline their goals at the start of the placement. Hosts should hold midpoint and final check-ins to measure progress towards the goals and offer feedback.

  • Post Fellowship Engagement: Mentors and fellows remain in touch to discuss progress on capstone project and future opportunities for collaboration, including ways in which the fellow can engage and support the host institution.
