Workshop on Food Safety and Security in Latin America
Sustained Dialogue on Peaceful Uses
The Sustained Dialogue on Peaceful Uses aims to expand the conversation on peaceful uses of nuclear science and identify opportunities for using nuclear technology in pursuit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With a participant-driven approach, the program brings together diverse stakeholders including national policy makers, the private sector, and the broader international development community. Dialogue among these diverse international organizations and their members fosters new relationships so that, as a global community, we can find ways for nuclear science and technology to most effectively serve our shared interest of sustainable development while identifying and addressing barriers to access.
We are focusing efforts on nine SDGs where nuclear science is currently poised to make a direct contribution, with an initial focus on its use to address development challenges related to food, water, health, and the environment. By creating a cooperative and engaging environment, the Sustained Dialogue aims to cultivate greater awareness of where nuclear technologies deliver the greatest impact.
Workshop on Food Safety and Security in Latin America
Organized by CRDF Global, in partnership with the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica de Paraguay, this workshop will take place July 16 - 18, 2024, in Asuncion, Paraguay, and will focus on identifying key issues and immediate next steps that can be taken to expand access to and utilization of nuclear science and technologies for the improvement of food safety and security in Latin America. The workshop will include a series of presentations and small and large group discussions on topics such as nuclear applications to improve food safety and production. Participants will be encouraged to actively participate in these discussions and identify collaborations that could help improve progress towards UN SDG 2 (Zero Hunger). This includes proposing local and regional models and best practices for the application of nuclear technologies, such as for creating new and/or more resilient crops, extending shelf-life of food, insect control, monitoring and optimizing food processing techniques, detecting food fraud, and sterilizing produce and products.
