SDPU Webinar on Plant Breeding Techniques for Underutilized Crops in Africa
Sustained Dialogue on Peaceful Uses
The Sustained Dialogue on Peaceful Uses of nuclear energy, science, and technology initiative (SDPU) aims to expand the global conversation on peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology and identify new opportunities for cooperation to advance these applications in pursuit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDPU facilitates discussion among a wide range of expert-level participants, including researchers, civil society leaders, industry representatives, government officials, regulators, development organizations and other global and regional stakeholders. Topics are driven by participants and focused on development needs, emphasizing case studies of potentially useful development models or unresolved challenges.
This activity, and the wider SDPU program, are organized with the U.S. Department of State’s office of Multilateral and Nuclear Security Affairs (MNSA) and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and operate in coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
SDPU Webinar on Plant Breeding Techniques for Underutilized Crops in Africa
Organized by CRDF, the SDPU Webinar on Plant Breeding Techniques for Underutilized Crops in Africa will be held on May 9, 2024, from 09:00 – 11:00 under the Sustained Dialogue on Peaceful Uses of nuclear energy, science, and technology initiative (SDPU). This webinar emerged from the July 2023 event hosted by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in connection with the SDPU, which focused on the role of science and technology in achieving SDG2 (Zero Hunger) and included strong participation by the IAEA.
The webinar will focus on exploring how different plant breeding techniques can be used to improve plant varieties in Africa in the face of climate change. It will feature a panel discussion with experts from academia, research, and the IAEA on niche applications where different plant breeding techniques can improve food security in Africa, particularly for underutilized crops. Additionally, we will hear how the Treaty on Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons provides a mechanism for uplifting and broadening access to peaceful uses of nuclear technology to address development needs like food security. The objective of webinar is to engage a diverse audience from across the food security community, as well as those from organizations like CGIAR, WorldVeg, and the African Academies of science to understand how plant breeding techniques can support ongoing efforts to increase food security, including under the U.S.-led Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils.
We encourage the registration of experts from academia, research institutions, development organizations, and public and private sectors.
For any questions on this webinar, please reach out to the organizers Carla Langenbucher (clangenbucher@crdfglobal.org) and Paul Sutton (psutton@crdfglobal.org).
This webinar and the SDPU are jointly funded by the U.S. Department of State and UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. For more information on the SDPU, please visit our website www.sustaineddialogue.com.
